Water-based penetrating stain
Like acid stains, this new-generation stain (typically a blend of acrylic polymers and pigments) penetrate the concrete to produce permanent color, ranging from translucent to opaque depending on the product. The key difference is that no chemical reaction occurs, so the color is more consistent. This product is also low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and safer to apply because it is free of solvents and acids.
You can achieve nearly any color with water-based stains. Unlike acid-based stain, they don't interact with the concrete that you're staining, so the color will stay consistent. Water-based stains are generally easier to apply and cleanup is minimal. However, the stain does adhere to the surface quickly, so fixing a mistake is more challenging.
Good to know
- The concrete that you stain must be at least one month old.
- For garages use an epoxy solution that's especially designed to handle wear and tear from cars and inclement weather.
- Unsure if your concrete was previously sealed? Pour a cup of water onto it and see if the water beads up. If it does bead up, there's a sealer. If the water is absorbed into the floor, there isn't any sealer.
